Tukre’

Image: Lucy Parakhina

Tukre’ explores how lineage and rites of passage transcend borders.  Inspired by the contents of his luggage on arrival in Australia, Raghav creates a memory map of his heritage through music and dance.  His movement, which combines delicate linear masculinity with speed and precision, is inspired in part by his grandfather, who as a jewel maker, spent his life “faceting” gems and diamonds – cutting, shaving and shining precious stones.  By mapping memories, Raghav uncovers how history is passed down through bloodlines, frying pans and faceting techniques!

Raghav is an Australian choreographer and performer of Indian heritage with training in modern and Indigenous contemporary dance. As a choreographer, Raghav’ s vocabulary and movement style combine delicate masculinity with speed and precision.

In 2012, he choreographed his first solo work KumKum at PACT in Sydney and explored time manipulation using rhythmical movement patterns. His choreographic practice was supported in 2013 through: Kick Start (Next Wave), Space Residency (Ausdance NSW), Research Room Residency (Critical Path) and JUMP (Australia Council for the Arts). In 2014, Raghav choreographed and performed Tukre’, a personal reflection on the impact of lineage on our lives, at Dancehouse in Melbourne for the Next Wave Festival and at Metro Arts in Brisbane. He also obtained a new work development grant from the Australia Council for the Arts to develop his next major work The Shape-Shifter, which combines 3D motion capture technology with live performance. In 2015, Raghav will continue to develop The Shape-Shifter and will also work on the initial phase of his first ensemble work through Seed Residency at Strut Dance, Perth.

As a performer, Raghav has collaborated and performed with many leading Australian choreographers including Marilyn Miller, Vicki van Hout, Martin del Amo, Narelle Benjamin and Sue Healey. In 2015 Raghav will perform in Sue Healey’s On View during Melbourne’s Dance Massive and at Carriageworks in Sydney.

Tukre’ was developed through 2013 Kickstart program for the 2014 Next Wave Festival. The initial presentation was supported by The Australia Council for the Arts, Arts NSW, DANCEHOUSE, UNSW and Sydney University.
